  • Central Scoop - June 15, 2018
    Friday, June 15th, 2018

Welcome to our weekly newsletter, The “Central Scoop”! Some of our weekly events, reminders, and updates are as follows:

**Volunteer Tea: Have you volunteered with us at Central this year? If so, we really appreciate you and would love to celebrate with you! We are hosting a Volunteer Assembly on Monday, June 18th at 2:15 pm. We will have a short assembly, followed by refreshments before you pick your children up for the day. Please join us if you are able!

**Staffing Update: This is a busy time of year as we are wrapping up the school year and celebrating our students, staff, and the fantastic year that they have had. Here are some of the staff who we will be saying farewell to:

Mrs. McDonald: Congratulations to Mrs. McDonald as she celebrates her retirement from a lovely and long career at the HDSB.
Mrs. Leyland: Congratulations to Mrs. Leyland as she now is the new full time Student Success teacher at Burlington Central (7-8) next door. As our students graduate, they will love to see her familiar face at their new school!
Mrs. Terry: We will miss her in her ESL position here, and wish her the best as she moves to Grade 7 & 8 at Brant Hills
Mrs. Watkins: We wish her well as she moves on to Tecumseh School in September in a Primary coverage position.
Miss Ward, Miss Cameron, Miss Vander Ploeg: These amazing teachers have made a huge difference in the lives of our students this year. They are dedicated, professional, knowledgeable and caring educators. As Occasional Teachers they are still waiting for permanent contracts, and we wish them well as they set off on new placements for September.

**Retirement Message from Mrs. McDonald: I would like to take this opportunity to say, “Thank you very much!” to the Central community. Thank you to the students, parents and staff. I have had the pleasure to teach at Central Public School for the past twenty-four years. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work and play with your children! I started as a Special Education teacher and eventually moved into the classroom. I have enjoyed coaching many teams and I am especially proud of the number of the students that now participate on the Cross Country Team. I am retiring this year and am looking forward to the next chapter of my life. I wish you all the best. Thank you, Adriana McDonald

**School Council Fun Fair: Come one, come all! Next Thursday (June 21st) is our School Council Fun Fair from 5:30-8:00 p.m. You can skip the line-up and pre-order tickets on Cashless for food, inflatables and treats. All funds will go towards fall athletics and a special literacy program for all students. Here’s what to expect! Inflatable slides + bouncy castles (1 ticket/each), Burgers, hot dogs + veggie burgers (3 tickets/each), Drinks, popcorn + freezies (1 ticket/each), Silent auction (variable), Cake walk (2 tickets), Photo booth (1 ticket), Free tattoos, games + face painting (free)…and more! We’re very thankful when our Central community helps out at our events! If you are able to volunteer, please sign up here: http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0B4BA9AF2AA4F85-centrals We look forward to seeing you there!

**Grade 6 Graduation: Next Friday, June 22nd we are having a graduation ceremony for our Grade 6 students and their guests. Please arrive at the school between 1:10 and 1:25, for a ceremony that will start at approximately 1:30 p.m. You are welcome to bring guests with you. Following the ceremony, you are invited to join us for some refreshments. Parking is very limited, so we encourage you to carpool and/or walk if possible.

**Last Day Early Dismissal: On Fri. June 29th, the last day of school, all elementary schools will dismiss 90 minutes early. At Central, our dismissal time is at 1:35 p.m., and crossing guards will be in place at this time. If you take a bus, Halton Student Transportation Service (HSTS) has posted a bus stop calculator on their webpage for parents to use to calculate their child's bus stop times.

**Donations?: Attention all Garage Salers or those who love to declutter! Our library is looking for some precious finds for next year. The vision is to engage students in some hands on experiences to enhance their learning. Any donations of the following items will be greatly appreciated: LEGO base mats, LEGO, K’nex, small wooden blocks for building, wooden dowling, beads, other kinds of building sets. We will gladly accept donations before the end of the year as well as in September. Thank you for supporting our busy little hands.

**Mabel’s Labels: Looking at the tremendous amount of clothing in our Lost and Found at this time of year, we wanted to encourage families to label clothing so that it can easily be returned to students. There are many ways to label, but if you choose to order through the Mabel’s Labels company, we do receive a percentage back in fundraising. Visit http://www.campaigns.mabelslabels.com. Once you are on the site, click on “Support a Fundraiser”, and choose “Central Public School (Burlington)”.

**Play Day: A huge thank you to our student leaders who led our younger students through the play day activities today. Our students participated well, and had a fun day!

**Spirit Day Fundraiser: On Tues. June 19th we are having a sports themed day run by our Spirit and Charity Leadership students. Dress in your favourite sports hats, jerseys, shirts, etc! They are asking for toonie donations (or more if able) to help give back to Halton Learning Foundation. The HLF provides so much support in the forms of emergency funding to help HDSB students in need. We have been the recipients of their support, want to give back, and your support is appreciated! If you want to learn more about this generous organization that supports so many of our students, please read about them at http://www.haltonlearningfoundation.ca

**Moving?: If you are going to be moving and not attending Central next year, we ask that you please contact the office as soon as possible. At this time of year all schools are class building, and we want to make sure your students are accounted for and placed well! If you are moving, we will ask that you please register your child at their new school as soon as possible, so that you are also counted in their registration numbers.

**Lunch Program: The Lunchbox Order lunch for Monday, June 18th is East Side Mario’s. Choose from Spaghettini with Tomato Sauce, Bowtie Pasta with Butter, Cheesy Bowties, Cheese or Pepperoni Pizza. Please order online http://www.lunchboxorders.com by Sunday, June 17th at NOON (12pm).

**School Council Lunches: Today was the final lunch day hosted by our hard-working School Council volunteers. We have had a great year of yummy lunches, and we thank them for the huge amount of work, organization and dedication that goes into providing those lunches for our students. Thanks to all!

**Can you help?: Our Stream of Dreams fish installation looks great, and we thank the volunteers who worked so hard on this. We’re almost finished, and now our lovely fish require some varnish so they can withstand our Canadian weather! We are looking for approximately 8 volunteers who would be able to bring a paint brush, and help to varnish the fish! Please respond to the doodle link below if you are free to help on Thursday, June 21st from 12-3 pm. Thanks in advance! https://doodle.com/poll/e8q5nyii2igybyxe

**June Birthday Book Club: The following students donated books to our library as part of the Birthday Book Club: Finnegan H., Graeson R., Addison R., Madison D., Carter H., Dusan K., Elsie Z., Declan F., Kaden S., Kylie L., Sasha P., Dusan B. and Sheril S. Thank you for your generous donations, and we hope you had a Happy Birthday!

**Summer Reading: Our students took out their final books from our library this week. Our library is closed, but the Burlington Public Library is open! We had a visit from the staff at the Burlington Public Library and heard all about the great programs that are being offered this summer. So, head down to your local branch and check it out!

**Jump Rope For Heart Results: This year, our students participated in Heart & Stroke’s Jump Rope for Heart event. Together, we raised $5882.80 for the foundation. For more than 35 years, Jump Rope for Heart has empowered kids to take charge of their heart and brain health. Jump ensures an active, educational event that raises funds in support of Heart & Stroke while motivating kids to practice healthy habits at an early age. The funds we raised will support research and education that gives kids across Canada the best start to a healthy and happy life. Thanks to your generosity, our school has also earned valuable resources through Heart & Stroke’s Give-back program. We thank you for your support!

**Like to Play?: Some of the parents and neighbours in the community are participating in the Healthy Kids Community Challenge and are hosting an event where you can play with your children in the streets! This event is on Cortland Drive (between Gary Cres. and Emerald St.), from 4:00-6:00 pm on June 19, 26 and July 3, 10, 17 & 24. Parents are invited to monitor and engage their children during play, as the street is blocked off from traffic. Volunteers will be there to provide some play materials. Bring bikes, scooters and toys from home! For more information, please visit their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/HKCCBurlington/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel

**Communication: Did you know we are on Twitter? Follow us @CPS_Chatter (see our web page for the link). We also encourage you to download the new HDSB app to your phone. It's a great way to stay connected to the school and board, gives School Cash Online and Absence Reporting access. and more! Look for "Halton District School Board" in the app store!

    Thursday, May 31st, 2018

Welcome to our weekly newsletter, The “Central Scoop”!

Some of our weekly events, reminders, and updates are as follows:

**Bike to School Week: We had a very successful week with many students participating in a heart healthy way of getting to school! We had over 323 students participating in some way as they walked, biked, or rolled to school. Thanks to the Athletic Leadership team for their work on this event, and to the parents who generously gave their time to help hand out stickers, capture photos and encourage our students!

**Jump Rope for Heart: We had to reschedule the event from yesterday due to the extreme humidity. We have now scheduled it for Friday, June 8th during periods 1 and 2 (approx. start at 9:15). Please make sure to send your child with extra water to stay hydrated, and (if possible) their own skipping rope. If you have donation envelopes at home, would you please ensure that they are returned by Thursday, June 7th for pickup by the Heart and Stroke foundation. We thank you for your support!

**Talent Show: Tryouts have been completed, and the acts have been chosen and posted. Congratulations to all of our performers! Our talent show will take place on Wednesday, June 27th from 9:00-10:25 a.m. Parents of performers are welcome to join us in the gym, starting at 8:45 a.m. We are looking forward to being entertained!

**Appreciation Breakfast: A huge thank you to the parents (and students) who so kindly treated us to a delicious staff appreciation breakfast on our PD day. It was a great way to start the day, and we really appreciate the support!

**Lunch Program: We sent home a separate email earlier this week indicating the online “LunchBox” program that we are trying out for the month of June. This is in addition to our School Council run lunch day, which continues to be run on Fridays. Please refer to that email for ordering details. Again, this is optional, and not meant to replace the current food days.

**Crash Rhythm: “Crash Rhythm” is coming to Central! Crash is a program presented by Hilary Whiskin. Each class from grade 1-6 will have one period with the presenter. She will use drums to inspire students and lead them through conduction, improvising, playing in an ensemble, songwriting and jamming. Crash Rhythm will be at Central June 4 and 6. We thank the Parent Council for allowing us to use funds from the Bake Sale to pay for this exciting opportunity.

    Friday, May 25th, 2018

Welcome to our weekly newsletter, The “Central Scoop”!

Some of our weekly events, reminders, and updates are as follows:

**Ramadan: Wishing our Muslim families Ramadan Mubarak during the celebration of Ramadan.

**Bike to School Week: We are participating in “Bike to School Week” next week (May 28-31). To promote physical health, and to reduce the use of cars, we encourage all of our students to Bike, Scooter, Walk or Roll to school if they are able. Our Leadership students will be taking a tally each day to see how we get to school!

**Kindie Orientation: We look forward to meeting our new to Kindergarten students and their families at our Open House on Wednesday, May 30th at 6:00 pm. If you haven’t received your invitation, please contact the office. We can’t wait to meet our newest students!

**Spirit Wear: Orders were placed online with the Spirit Wear Company, Jimmy Tee’s, and arrived and were distributed today. We look forward to seeing our students in their new Central clothing!

**Jump Rope for Heart: Thank you for your support of our Jump Rope for Heart campaign. Pledge forms were sent home with students last week, and we are having our Jump-a-Thon at the end of the day on Thursday, May 31st

**Talent Show: Auditions for the Talent Show are now complete. Thanks to all the students who bravely came out to share their talents with us. The list of acts that will move forward to practise and perform for the talent show will be posted next Wednesday in front of Mrs. Garvey’s room. If you aren’t in the show this year, keep practising and come out again next year!

**Kilometre Club: The numbers are in! We would like to extend a huge congratulations to our top runners. In Junior, the top two runners are Sydney R. and Sam H. Our top two primary runners are Liam M. and Bennett S. These runners will be registered in the Moon In June Race on June 2. Thank you to Foot Tools and Parent Council for sponsoring them. Thanks also to the dedicated staff and volunteers who came out faithfully to help with this initiative. We really appreciate your support! Invites have gone out for the Bagel Party being held on June 6. This year we had over 75% of our students participate! Way to go, Central!

**EQAO: Our Grade 3’s have now finished writing their EQAO assessments, and we thank them for their perseverance and hard work. Way to go! Our Grade 6’s will write on Mon, Tues and Wed. next week.

**Music Visit: The Grade 2’s visited Central High School this morning to attend music classes. The grade 9 music classes played for us, let the students hold and play some of the instruments and they learned more about the instrument families. It was heartwarming watching some former Little Central students teach and guide our present students. We would like to thank them and Mr. Baxter for providing an enriching and positive experience.

**Lunch Program: As the school year is wrapping up and we are preparing for next year, we are going to take the month of June to test out a different option for ordering lunches for students. We are working with the “Lunchbox” Program, which is an online system where parents order online with the company and food is delivered to the school for students. We want to see how this works in our school, so we will pilot this program starting on Mondays for the month of June. This is in addition to the School Council Lunch program that is continuing to run on Fridays. Again, this is optional and is in a pilot phase for us. Watch for an email message to come home next week with ordering information.

**Message from School Council: We LOVE our teachers at Central. Help us to CELEBRATE them Friday June 1st with our annual Teacher Appreciation Breakfast. Please drop all items labeled (Teacher Ap. Breakfast) to the office no later than 3pm on Thursday May 31st, all refrigerated items will be placed in the school council fridge. • Bike to School Week
    Dear Central PS Families,

Spring is here, bringing warmer weather and longer days. It’s a great time of year to walk, bike or roll to school. Using these modes of active transportation helps to reduce congestion, improve air quality and promote health. Students who travel to school actively arrive at school more alert, focused and ready to learn.

For these reasons, our school is participating in Bike to School Week, and we invite your child to participate. It might be called Bike to School Week, but it is really about promoting all forms of active transportation - walking, biking and rolling (scooters, skateboards, roller blades, wheelchairs and more). Schools that participate have the opportunity to replace or enhance their school’s bike racks by participating!

Date /Time/ Event description: Ride, scooter, skateboard or walk to school each day beginning Monday May 28th through Thursday May 31st. Bikes and scooters can be locked at the bike racks (or fence) located on the back field by the parking lot.

Bike to School Week is a celebration of cycling and active transportation. Schools, public health offices, municipalities and regions across Ontario are coordinating activities focused on Bike to School Week, to promote and support cycling to school. Visit biketoschoolweek.ca, or contact the school office for more information about our school’s event.

    Sincerely,
The Staff at Central Public School
